The road is the color of raspberry syrup and the houses glow like they swallowed the sunset. Kandinsky painted this Winter Landscape in 1909, and he clearly cared more about how a place feels than how it looks.

As a Kandinsky diamond painting it's pure color and mood, a bright wink on a gray winter wall.

Kandinsky's Murnau Years

In 1908 Wassily Kandinsky and the painter Gabriele Münter began spending long stays in Murnau, a small market town in the Bavarian foothills, and in 1909 Münter bought a house there. Those years pushed Kandinsky toward intense, unnatural color. Winter Landscape, painted in 1909, turns a snowy road into a play of yellows, blues and violets.

A Late Start and a Musical Eye

Kandinsky was born in Moscow in 1866 and first trained in law and economics. He gave up an academic career at 30 to study painting in Munich.

He thought about color much as others think about sound. In his 1911 book Concerning the Spiritual in Art, he compared bright yellow to a trumpet blast. Winter Landscape already shows that idea, with color chosen for feeling rather than accuracy.

Tips for This Kandinsky Diamond Painting

It suits crafters who like a bit of a challenge. The glowing house, bare trees and fluid sky are broken into rhythmic color blocks, which is great for diamonds but means many edges where colors meet. Work from the road outward, and place each color across the whole canvas before switching to the next.

Kandinsky's snow is hardly white at all, built instead from blues, violets and warm yellows. Keep those colors separate as you go, since their contrast is what makes the scene glow.

A Pair From the Same Years

For a companion piece from the same period, see our Houses at Murnau diamond painting kit, also by Kandinsky. Hung side by side, the two show how quickly his color was changing.

He later left the visible world behind entirely, so pictures like this one, where a road and houses are still easy to read, are a rare chance to watch abstraction begin.
