Hilma af Klint's Altarpiece No. 1 is geometry turned divine, now available as an Abstract Diamond Painting. The pyramid rises like a prayer, its gradients climbing from earthy red to celestial blue, all leading to a radiant gold sun that feels more spiritual than physical. She painted decades before abstraction had a name, as if she'd been listening to a frequency the rest of humanity hadn't tuned into yet.

Hilma af Klint's Altarpieces

Hilma af Klint, a Swedish painter born in 1862, made her three Altarpieces in 1915 as the closing works of The Paintings for the Temple, a large cycle she believed was guided by spiritual messages. She asked that her abstract work stay hidden for twenty years after her death, and it reached a wide public only in the 1980s.

Was Hilma af Klint the First Abstract Painter?

Many historians now think so. She was making abstract paintings by 1906, several years before Kandinsky's first abstractions. She trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and earned a living with portraits and landscapes, while her abstract work stayed private.

With four other women, a group known as The Five, she held spiritual sessions that shaped the ideas behind the Temple paintings. She died in 1944.

What to Look for in Altarpiece No. 1

A tall pyramid rises in bands of color toward a gold circle near the top. Many viewers read it as a path upward, from the material world toward the spiritual, with the gold sun as the goal.

Diamond Painting Altarpiece No. 1

The pyramid is built from bands of color that step from warm to cool, so it's natural to work in rows. Start at the base and climb upward band by band, then finish with the gold circle at the top. Each band is a clean shape, which keeps the work calm and steady.

It suits modern interiors, studios and quiet rooms. Explore more groundbreaking art in our famous paintings.
