Essential Tips for Mastering Acrylic Painting

Basic Recommendations for Painting by Numbers

Our Canvas by Numbers kits include good quality, water-based acrylic paints that show bright colors and work easily. Clean up is simple - wash your brushes with water; no strong chemicals are needed. To protect your clothes, wear an apron or an old shirt while you work.

Useful Painting Tricks:

  • Place your work in a well-lit area so you see the numbers and lines clearly. A flat table works well; a stand may help too.
  • Mix your paints with a toothpick or brush before you use them. This keeps the color smooth and even.
  • Start with smaller parts before you work on bigger areas. If you make a custom portrait, begin with the eyes.
  • Wash your brush before you change colors. Keep a small jar of water close so cleaning remains quick. For finer work try our extra brush set.
  • Seal the lids tightly after you use the paints so they do not dry out. If the paint grows thick, add one or two drops of water and stir well.
  • Light colors may require extra layers for more cover - let each layer dry before you add the next.
  • If you use the wrong color in one spot, let it dry and then paint it with the right color.

Simple Methods for a Better Look

Want to raise your paint by numbers work? These are some steps that help your final work improve. Try them on a spare canvas first to choose the best result.

  • Dry Brushing: Use thin layers of paint diluted with water, so that parts of the canvas still show. This gives a soft look like a light watercolor.
  • Highlighting: Once your work dries, use a lighter color to softly brush over raised parts to add depth.
  • Blending: While the paint stays wet, use a dry brush to lightly mix the edges of two colors. This softens hard lines and works well on abstract works.
  • Striping: Use a fine brush to add small, light strokes over dark spots. Use this step to paint hair or add a subtle texture to backgrounds.
  • Glossy Finish: To get a shiny look, let your work dry completely then add a clear coat. For the best outcome apply a thin layer in a horizontal stroke, wait next to then add another layer in a vertical stroke.

How to Mount Your Finished Painting

Let your work dry a minimum of 24 hours before you mount it so the paint sets fully. If you bought from our store, many kits come with a ready frame. If you mount it separately, remember that canvas works do not need glass - simply put them directly into the frame. You have then made your own artwork!
