Tom Thomson and Algonquin Park

Tom Thomson spent much of his short career in Algonquin Park, Ontario, working as a guide and fire ranger while he sketched lakes, rivers and forests from his canoe. He drowned on Canoe Lake in July 1917, at 39.

His friends went on to found the Group of Seven in 1920, and his northern landscapes shaped how Canada pictures its own wilderness.

From Commercial Artist to Painter of the North

Thomson grew up near Owen Sound, Ontario, and worked as a commercial designer in Toronto, at the firm Grip Ltd., where he met several future Group of Seven painters. He made small oil sketches on wooden panels outdoors, then worked some up into large canvases in a Toronto studio. The Jack Pine and The West Wind are his best known.

Fall Color in the North Woods

In the Northland dates from the fall of 1915. Slender trees lean across the foreground in reds, oranges and yellows, and through them you see water and dark distant hills. Thomson's paint is thick and choppy, which gives the leaves their texture.

The scene is all autumn: the short, bright season before the northern lakes freeze, when Thomson did some of his most colorful sketching.

In the Northland Diamond Painting Tips

The tree trunks are long, narrow lines, so do them first to set the structure. The foliage then fills in around them in warm patches, and the lake and hills behind are calmer and quick.

The fall colors hold many close reds and oranges, so check symbols carefully where leaves overlap. For another of his forest scenes, see our The Birch Grove diamond painting.
