Wilhelm Morgner painted working people in bold, distinctive color, and this clay worker with his yellow cart is a striking example.

Zoom in on that yellow cart. It anchors the whole picture, and as a diamond painting its color gets even louder. A great choice for collectors of Expressionist art or anyone who likes a picture with some grit and honest labor in it.

Who Was Wilhelm Morgner?

Wilhelm Morgner was a German Expressionist painter from Soest, in Westphalia. He was born in 1891 and died in the First World War in 1917, when he was only 26. In a few short years he produced a striking body of work, much of it showing farm laborers, brick and clay workers around his hometown.

He painted them with strong outlines and bright, almost unreal color, giving hard work a kind of dignity.

Morgner and German Expressionism

As a teenager Morgner studied with the painter Georg Tappert in the artists' colony of Worpswede. He was soon drawn to the bold color of Van Gogh and to the new painting coming out of Munich and Berlin. Expressionists wanted color and line to show feeling, rather than simply describe what was in front of them.

His early death cut short one of the most promising careers of his generation.

What to Look for in the Painting

The figure bends into his task, and the shapes around him are simplified into flat, strong areas. Outlines are heavy and dark, almost like a woodcut. The colors are chosen for force rather than realism, which is why the cart can glow a pure, loud yellow.

Clay Worker with a Yellow Cart as a Diamond Painting

The yellow cart is the anchor. Its color is so loud that the figure and landscape organize themselves around it. In diamonds, those flat, saturated fields go down quickly and shine.

Start with the cart to set the tone, then work outward into the figure and ground. It suits collectors of early modern art, a home office or a workshop wall. Find more designs among our diamond painting kits.
