John William Waterhouse painted Boreas in 1903, named for the Greek god of the north wind. A maiden is caught in a swirling storm amid blooming flowers, and the whole scene feels charged and dramatic. This Waterhouse diamond painting is a calm craft with a stormy subject, a nice contrast for an evening on the couch.

Boreas and the North Wind

In Greek myth, Boreas was the god of the cold north wind, usually shown as a winged, bearded figure who swept in with winter. John William Waterhouse left the god himself out of the picture. Instead he painted a young woman caught in his gust, her robes whipping around her as she stands among spring flowers.

The Greeks told many stories about Boreas. In the best known, he carried off Orithyia, a princess of Athens, in a sudden storm.

Who Was John William Waterhouse?

Born in Rome in 1849 to English painter parents, Waterhouse built his career in London and became known for women from myth and legend, such as The Lady of Shalott. His style blends academic polish with the romantic mood of the Pre-Raphaelites.

The Lady of Shalott, at Tate Britain, and Hylas and the Nymphs, at Manchester Art Gallery, are among the most reproduced Victorian paintings today.

What to Look For in Boreas

Waterhouse shows the wind only through what it does. Nothing in the sky is drawn as a god; instead you read the force of the gust in the lifted fabric and the way the figure leans into it. The bright flowers at her feet keep the scene in spring, against the cold of the north wind.

Diamond Painting a Windblown Scene

The swirling fabric is the heart of this design, and its folds become long, flowing bands of sparkle. Work the background and flowers first, then follow the robes in long curves. Find more classic works among our famous paintings.
