Tree Trunks in the Grass - Van Gogh’s Final Spring in Saint-Rémy

Van Gogh painted Tree Trunks in the Grass in April 1890 while en route to checking into the asylum in Saint-Paul-de-Mausole. He would leave Saint-Rémy in May. Instead of depicting the grand olive groves surrounding the asylum, Van Gogh looked closer to the ground at a patch of meadow that he found to be strikingly beautiful.

A Closer Look at the Brushwork and Composition

Van Gogh painted this artwork in such a way that draws the viewer’s eyes to the trees in the foreground. There is no horizon line in the painting, no features of the surrounding countryside. Yet, cropped to highlight only the trees and their features, Van Gogh included an influence from his beloved Japanese art prints that he featured in his home alongside his brother Theo. The trees are rendered in thick strokes of violet, ivory, and cobalt to depict the bark and foliage. The wild flowers that dot the meadow are depicted with short brushstrokes of red and yellow to highlight their petals.
