Why Did Van Gogh Paint Old Shoes?

While living in Paris in 1886 and 1887, Vincent van Gogh painted worn work boots several times. For him, the shoes stood for hard work and ordinary lives, the same people he had drawn as a young artist in the Netherlands.

The dark browns recall The Potato Eaters, which he painted in Nuenen in 1885, shortly before he left for Antwerp and then Paris.

The Shoes That Started a Philosophy Debate

In his essay The Origin of the Work of Art, written in the 1930s, the philosopher Martin Heidegger described the shoes as belonging to a peasant woman and used them to talk about the world of work.

In 1968 the art historian Meyer Schapiro answered that they were most likely Van Gogh's own shoes, worn on his walks around the city. The argument made a pair of old boots one of the most discussed still lifes in modern thought.

Van Gogh's Shoes as a Diamond Painting

The palette is earthy, with browns, ochres and dark blues. Fill the background and floor first, then the shoes from their darkest creases to their lighter scuffs, and finish with the laces.

The leather has many close browns side by side, so check each symbol before you place a row. Those small changes are what make the shoes look scuffed and lived in.

A Thoughtful Gift

This is a clever pick for a hiker, a cobbler or a fan of the quieter side of Van Gogh. More of his work is in our Van Gogh collection.
