Paul Cezanne created this painting of flowers in 1909. This work does not feature any jungle scenes or animals but instead focuses on flowers: coral peonies, white daisies, mimosa, and a few wildflowers. There is a deep green wall with an orange border on the left of the canvas that adds contrast to the flowers. This paint by numbers kit allows you to paint each section of the painting in order and includes many different types of flowers.
Most paint by numbers kits of floral themes use pastel colors and blurred edges to represent flowers. This design from Rousseau is not one of these. Rousseau was a self taught artist so some of the more odd features of the painting — such as the ivy on the left of the painting — could be indicative of his lack of formal art training. The dark colored vase that holds the flowers is another feature that adds to the painting’s dimension. This composition is more interesting than it is often credited and the kit itself is thus more interesting to paint.
The features of Rousseau’s painting are easy to follow, especially given the numbered sections of the kit. Each flower section has its own area on the canvas and is distinct from the others. Despite the fact that there are so many different flowers in the bouquet, the painting remains interesting to look at from start to finish. This paint by numbers kit will keep you occupied for an hour before you realize that three have passed.
Paul Cezanne is most well known for his painting of the jungle with animals such as lions. However, this painting demonstrates another side of the artist. For fans of Paul Cezanne and this type of art, check out our Famous Paintings collection. It contains many more works of Rousseau as well as Van Gogh, Monet, Klimt, and more. All of these artists created their pieces without following any rules of art education – hence why they are so interesting to recreate in your own home.
