Russ Duerksen Paint by Numbers: Bird Paintings
Russ Duerksen paints birds with a patient, natural eye: the steady gaze of an owl, a pair of cardinals in the backyard, ducks in a winter setting. His bird paintings balance fine feather detail with calm, simple backgrounds, and our Russ Duerksen paint by numbers kits let you bring each bird to life one numbered section at a time. They make a thoughtful gift for bird watchers, nature lovers and anyone with a feeder outside the kitchen window. Birds are a rewarding subject for paint by numbers, because feathers are naturally built from small patches of color that the numbered sections capture well.

Tips for Painting Feathers by Numbers
Background first
Fill the large sky and branch areas before moving to the bird, so no background color overlaps the feathers.
Dark to light
Paint darker feather tones first, then add the highlights on top, which gives feathers depth.
Fine brush for eyes
Save the smallest brush for eyes and beaks, where detail matters most, since a bright eye brings the whole bird to life.
Let it dry
Give each layer time to dry so the edges stay crisp, especially where light feathers meet a dark background.
