Paul Klee Paintings, One Color at a Time

Paul Klee (1879 to 1940) was born near Bern in Switzerland and made small, witty pictures that sit somewhere between abstraction, fantasy and a child's drawing. He taught at the Bauhaus through the 1920s and wrote at length about color and line. His glowing grids and playful symbols make Paul Klee paintings some of the most cheerful modern art you can recreate with paint by numbers.

Three Turning Points in Paul Klee's Art

Tunisia, 1914

A short trip to Tunisia changed his work. He wrote in his diary: "Color has taken possession of me... Color and I are one. I am a painter."

The Bauhaus, 1921 to 1931

He taught at the famous German art school alongside Wassily Kandinsky, and painted grids of colored squares and layered bands of tone.

Bern, 1933 to 1940

Forced out of his teaching post by the Nazis, he returned to Switzerland. His late works use thick, dark lines and larger shapes.
