Kawase Hasui Paint by Numbers: Quiet Japanese Landscapes
Kawase Hasui (1883 to 1957) was a Tokyo-born printmaker and a leading artist of shin-hanga, the "new prints" movement that revived Japanese woodblock printing in the 20th century. Working with the publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō, he traveled all over Japan sketching temples, snowy bridges, misty harbors and moonlit shrines. In 1956 he was named a Living National Treasure. Our Kawase Hasui paint by numbers kits turn his peaceful scenes into calm, rewarding projects.

How Shin-hanga Prints Were Made
The artist
Hasui drew the design and chose the colors, often from sketches made on his travels.
The carver
A craftsman cut a separate woodblock for each color, sometimes dozens for one print.
The printer
Each block was inked and pressed by hand, building up soft gradients of sky and water.
Tips for Painting Kawase Hasui by Numbers
Why Hasui suits paint by numbers
Shin-hanga prints are made from carved blocks, each carrying one color. That layered, flat-color structure translates naturally to a numbered canvas, so the finished painting keeps the look of a print.
Painting mist and snow
Paint the palest numbers first and work toward the darker shapes. Soft areas like mist, snow and sky will blend more smoothly that way. Save small details such as lanterns, figures and falling snowflakes for the very end.
