Paul Klee and the Bauhaus Years
Paul Klee painted Flora on Sand in 1927, while he was teaching at the Bauhaus, the German art and design school famous for its modern ideas. His classes there focused on color and form, and he filled notebooks with theories about how colors behave next to each other. This painting puts those ideas into practice.
Klee joined the school in 1921 and taught there for ten years. His lessons on color were among the most influential at the school, and his students included future designers, weavers and architects.
What to Look For in Flora on Sand
There are no flowers to find. Klee suggests a garden on sandy ground through color alone: warm ochres and dusty pinks for the earth, muted greens and blues for growth, and a few bright reds and yellows like blooms. Each square is slightly uneven, so the grid feels handmade and alive rather than mechanical.
