Paul Signac (1863 to 1935) was the French painter who, with Georges Seurat, developed pointillism: small, separate touches of pure color that blend in the viewer's eye. After Seurat's early death in 1891, Signac became the leading voice of Neo-Impressionism, and his later harbors and coastlines moved to larger, mosaic-like strokes full of Mediterranean light. Painter and sailor
Signac was a keen sailor who owned many boats and painted ports all along the French coast. In 1892 he sailed into Saint-Tropez, then a quiet fishing village, and made it his summer home.
Writer and champion
In 1899 he published From Eugène Delacroix to Neo-Impressionism, explaining the color theory behind the style. For many years he was president of the Société des Artistes Indépendants, supporting younger painters such as Henri Matisse. His Portrait of Félix Fénéon (1890) at the Museum of Modern Art is one of his most famous works.
