John Singer Sargent Paint by Numbers: Venice in Light
John Singer Sargent (1856 to 1925) was an American painter born in Florence to American parents, and the most sought-after portrait painter of his day. He worked in Paris and then London, and he returned to Venice again and again over his career, painting its canals, palaces and gondolas in quick, luminous brushwork. Our John Singer Sargent paint by numbers kit brings one of those Venetian views to your easel.

From a gondola
Later in life he painted many quick watercolors of canals and bridges, often working from a boat.
Light first
Sargent cared more about light on water and stone than about architectural detail, which gives his Venice its glow. He often chose quiet side canals over the famous views.
Tips Before You Paint Sargent's Venice by Numbers
Painting his Venice
Sargent painted fast, with loose strokes. On the canvas his reflections become many small sections in close shades. Start with the sky, then the buildings, and finish with the water.
Frames and sizes
Choose a rolled canvas, a DIY frame, a pre-stretched canvas or a canvas board. Sizes run from 16x20" (40x50 cm) up to 24x30" (60x75 cm) for a statement piece.
