About Franz Marc’s The Foxes
Franz Marc's The Foxes was painted in 1913 as a precursor to the notoriety of his later works. Marc always wanted to be one with nature and believed animals to be pure spirits, longing only to paint what they embody. As a member founder of the Blue Rider (Der Blaue Reiter), Marc wanted to focus less on reality and more on emotion and sense of movement, even through non-representational color. Here, red foxes become subtle pieces of planes and color fields, moving along the rhythm of the piece as much as they are static in time.
