Paul Gauguin (1848 to 1903) worked as a stockbroker in Paris before he turned to painting full time in his thirties. He became one of the great Post-Impressionists, known for flat areas of bold color, strong outlines and scenes from Brittany and Tahiti. Brittany
In Pont-Aven he led a circle of painters who used flat color and heavy outlines. The Yellow Christ (1889), now at the Buffalo AKG Art Museum, comes from this period.
Arles
In late 1888 he spent about two months painting beside Vincent van Gogh in Arles, a stay that ended after their famous quarrel.
Tahiti
He sailed to Tahiti in 1891 and painted lush scenes like Mata Mua (1892), now at the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid. He died in the Marquesas Islands in 1903.
