Frequently Asked Questions

Katsushika Hokusai (1760 to 1849) was a Japanese artist and printmaker, one of the most influential figures in art history. He's famous worldwide for The Great Wave off Kanagawa and his woodblock prints of Mount Fuji, work that went on to inspire Western artists like Van Gogh and Monet. His bold lines and dramatic compositions make his art a joy to recreate.

This collection features eight Hokusai paint by numbers kits: The Great Wave off Kanagawa, Fine Wind, Clear Morning (Red Fuji), Fuji from Gotenyama at Shinagawa on the Tōkaidō, The Tiger and the Moon, Hydrangea and Swallow, Peonies and Canary, The Ghost of Kohada Koheiji, and Sesshu Ajigawaguchi Tenposan. The Great Wave and The Tiger and the Moon are also available as diamond paintings.

There's a mix. The Great Wave off Kanagawa, Hydrangea and Swallow, and The Ghost of Kohada Koheiji are rated Beginner, so they're a great place to start. Scenes like Fine Wind, Clear Morning (Red Fuji), The Tiger and the Moon, and Sesshu Ajigawaguchi Tenposan are rated Intermediate, with more detailed line work that suits painters with a little experience.

Why his prints suit paint by numbers

Woodblock prints are built from flat areas of color inside strong outlines, which is exactly how a numbered canvas works. That is why many Hokusai kits are beginner friendly.
