Franz Marc Paintings as Paint by Numbers
Franz Marc (1880 to 1916) was a German Expressionist who painted animals in colors no one had seen on a horse or a cow before. In 1911 he founded the Blue Rider (Der Blaue Reiter) group in Munich with Wassily Kandinsky. His career was cut short when he was killed at Verdun in 1916, but Franz Marc paintings remain some of the most loved images of early modern art. Our kits let you paint several of them yourself.
Franz Marc's Language of Color
Blue
For Marc, blue stood for the masculine and the spiritual. It is the color of his famous horses.
Yellow
Yellow meant the feminine, gentle and joyful. Think of the leaping Yellow Cow.
Red
Red was matter, heavy and violent, the color that the other two had to balance.
Animals
He saw animals as purer than people, and painted them to show how they feel, not how they look.
Franz Marc's Life in Brief
Munich and Paris
Born in Munich in 1880, the son of a landscape painter, Marc studied at the Munich Academy. Trips to Paris in 1903 and 1907 introduced him to Van Gogh and Gauguin, and their color changed his work.
The Blue Rider
With Kandinsky he organized the Blue Rider exhibitions of 1911 and 1912 and edited The Blue Rider Almanac, a manifesto for a new, spiritual art.
