Rousseau's Dream Jungles

Henri Rousseau worked as a toll collector in Paris and taught himself to paint. His jungles and lagoons came from visits to the botanical gardens and from picture books, which gives them their simple, dreamlike look.

Where to Begin

Start with the flamingos and the flowers in front, then the water and its reflections. The row of trees and the sky behind are broad areas that finish quickly.
