Cassius M. Coolidge Collection
While Coolidge had little to no formal training as an artist, that certainly didn't stop him from leaving his mark in the world of art through his well-known poker paintings. He is also credited with the creation of comic foregrounds, which are essentially a combination of comics, painting, and photography. He would draw caricature versions of the subjects sitting in front of him, which are then photographed for the final portrait. Think of carnivals and their wooden painted board with a hole for the head to go through for a photo op.
His humor would eventually be reflected in his most famous work, which is a series of paintings known as "Dogs Playing Poker." The series included dogs in all kinds of human activities. Today, these anthropomorphic depictions of dogs are a beloved part of pop culture.
